Lombok and the Gili Islands Travel Guide

Indonesia’s rising star, and its island neighbors.

Lombok is still nowhere near as popular as its neighbor Bali, and in some ways it is the better holiday destination: less traffic and nicer beaches. Here is how to plan a trip to Lombok, Mount Rinjani and the Gili Islands.

10 things to know before visiting Lombok

Open each one for the quick version, or read the full article.

1. It has better beaches than Bali

Lombok’s beaches have powdery white sand and clear turquoise water. Some of the nicest have very little infrastructure and few visitors, particularly along the southern coast. Do not go to Bali expecting empty, pristine white-sand beaches.

2. Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia

Lombok is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, and North and Central Lombok are magnificent with rice terraces, forests and lush valleys. Senaru and Sembalun, at the foot of Rinjani, are gateway towns for trekking, and you can arrange a climb there yourself.

Why you should visit Senaru
3. It is near Bali

Take the public ferry from Bali’s Padang Bai harbor to Lombok’s Lembar port (around 4 to 5 hours), or a 30-minute flight from Denpasar to Lombok International Airport in Praya. A side trip from Bali is easy to arrange.

4. It is even more accessible now

All commercial flights now land at the new Lombok International Airport, which handles frequent flights from Indonesian cities such as Surabaya, Makassar and Jakarta, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

5. South Lombok is developing fastest

The airport is in South Lombok, so expect more roads and infrastructure there. The region has some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, and the coastal town of Kuta is popular for its proximity to the airport, beaches and decent tourist infrastructure. We recommend staying here for at least a couple of days.

6. Public transport is limited

Buses run only between main towns, are very cheap, but are hard to navigate if you do not speak Bahasa Indonesia. For freedom, rent a car or motorcycle. Rented motorcycles typically cannot be taken out of their region unless you ask the owner’s permission.

7. The roads undulate

Many roads are zig-zags carved around valleys, so be extra careful on a motorcycle. Driving a car is less stressful, as most roads are well paved. The road between the northern towns (Sembalun, Senaru) and the south is tricky, so we hired an experienced local driver through our hotel.

8. Lombok is the gateway to the Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are so close that they are often clustered with Lombok as one destination. Most travelers spend a couple of days there for fun in the sun and a few wild nights.

9. The best time to visit is April to October

That is the dry season. The rainy season runs from about October to March. Christmas and New Year are busier, with higher rates. During Ramadan, most restaurants in the capital Mataram close in the daytime, but Kuta and the southern coast still have restaurants open.

10. You can explore on your own

Lombok is less touristy and less convenient than Bali, but traveling on your own, without a travel agent, is very possible and can save you a lot of money.

BALI OR LOMBOK?

The differences between Bali and Lombok

Both islands are in Indonesia, but they are very different.

Bali

  • More popular, with a massive collection of hotels, restaurants, bars and tour offices
  • Busy roads that can make it feel like a hectic city
  • Predominantly Hindu/Buddhist, with temples and a spiritual, artistic appeal
  • Good surfing, but beaches should not be the reason to go
  • Easy for first-timers and families

Lombok

  • Still gaining popularity: fewer visitors and beaches you can have to yourself
  • Less developed, with clusters of hotels in Senggigi and Kuta
  • Muslim, with moderate and tolerant locals who are generally shy at first
  • White powdery beaches and turquoise water, plus Mount Rinjani for trekkers
  • Best for off-the-beaten-path adventurers and backpackers

THE GILI ISLANDS

The Gili Islands

Three small islands off Lombok’s coast: Gili Trawangan (Gili T), Gili Meno and Gili Air. Motorized vehicles are not allowed, so you get around on foot, by bicycle or by horse cart.

Gili Trawangan

Gili T is the largest and most developed of the three, and the party hub of the Gili Islands and all of Lombok. It is the best choice for amenities and accessibility, and where we stayed on our last visit.

Gili Air

The smallest and closest to the mainland, and the least developed: a laid-back backpacker favorite with quiet beaches, relaxed bars and a coastal path you can walk around in one to two hours. Swimming, snorkeling and diving are the main activities.

10 things to know about Gili Air

Getting there

From Lombok, make your way to Bangsal Harbor on the west coast and take the public ferry (less than 30 minutes) or a faster, pricier speedboat. Between islands, buy tickets at the Gili Trawangan public pier.

Island to island

Take the public ferry or speedboat between islands, and mind the ferry times so you do not get stuck. Most snorkeling boat tours also include a stopover at Gili Air.

WHERE TO STAY

Where to stay

On the Gili Islands we stayed mainly on Gili Trawangan for its amenities and accessibility, at the Gili Amor Boutique Resort, close to the main street of bars and restaurants. On Gili Air, rooms vary greatly with budget, and you can get a beachfront room for a good price. In Senaru we stayed at Rinjani Lodge.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

Why get travel insurance for Lombok

Roads can be tricky, treks are demanding and help can be far away. Travel insurance that covers medical services, lost passports and emergency evacuation is a smart move before a trip like this.
